The Florida Diversity Council hosted the 6th annual LGBT Allies Diversity Summit in Orlando, Florida at UCF’s Rosen College of Hospitality on Friday, June 16th, 2017. This event is held on annual basis to recognize leaders in corporate America and within the community who exemplify recognizable LGBTA advocacy efforts. This year’s co-chairs Karen Wesley and Daniel Burnett did an amazing job at putting together a great event as we had over 130 individuals in attendance.
Emcee Greg Pallone, reporter from Central Florida News 13 did a fantastic job by channeling the energy in the room and maintaining it throughout the event. He did a fantastic job at moderating the opening panel session which was focused on The Impact of an Ally: More than just a Title as well as recognizing LGBT Ally Award and LGBT Leader Award recipients.
This year’s theme was Modeling Inclusion: Broadening Workplace and Community Engagement.Keynote speaker Luis Martinez from the City of Orlando did an exemplary job shaping his keynote speech on City of Orlando: Inclusiveness in Government, the Workplace, and the Community. He started his speech on a personal sharing the details from when he first arrived to Orlando from Puerto Rico to work at Disney to detail all the initiatives the City of Orlando has done for the LGBT community.
There were 2 wonderful breakout sessions, the first which was focused The Power of Language: Fostering an Inclusive Culture which was presented by Dr. Leia Cain and Dr. J. Michael Denton from the University of South Florida. The second which was focused on Transforming Employee Resource Groups into Effective Business Teams which was presented by Brian Gray from Wyndham Vacation Ownership.
Overall it was a fantastic event that was well received by the audience that highlighted the LGBT Community and its allies. For more information please visit floridadiversitycouncil.org.
