The Illinois Diversity Council’s first newsletter of 2017 reaches you at a moment of considerable discord in the civic life of our nation. And yet, despite the many challenges we face, I find myself feeling optimistic about the future. At this writing, the U.S. economy by most measures is faring quite well. Unemployment is below 5 percent, and average hourly wages have crept steadily upward over the past year, which suggests workers are beginning to realize the benefits of a stronger job market.
